The South has always been known for its richness in history. Story telling is one of the South's favorite and most timeless pasttimes and it creates a history of its own. The past continually shapes and influences who we are, especially in the South. We may not always be proud of the things we did in our past, but we are always willing to learn from them. History in Southern poetry plays a pivotal role in setting the tone and the theme for many poems. As Sean writes about in his blog, music and history often go hand in hand; but so do history and nature, and history and religion. The point I am trying to make is that without history or historical references, Southern poetry would be a far cry from what we know it as today. An emphasis on the past is one of the key elements in distinguishing Southern poetry from other genres, and it is what makes it so special.
