Religion

There is the old cliché of the South being known as the “Bible Belt” of the United States. This saying is one that defines the South to a certain extent. To follow stereotypes, the South is more conservative and religious then the rest of the nation and this fact is evident in the literature that emerges from the Southern regions. When looking at Southern poetry specifically there is evidence of several themes and motifs that are reoccurring in the works that come from the South. These themes define what is Southern in poetry. One of the most common themes that are seen is the presence of religion and God. Whether this idea is present in a negative light due to one’s upbringing, or in obscure allusions, or in a positive light of seeing God in everyday living, there is seemingly always the presence of spirituality in the Southern poetry that we have read thus far in the course.
